4G Wireless Networks

Compare and contrast 3G wireless networks to 4G networks

Services and applications

3G telecommunications network is currently the best option for the mobile phone users. Currently 3G is being fully operated in the world and provides optimum speeds for downloads and uploads. 4g network is the future technology which is currently being implemented by the mobile networks providers across the globe. 3G fully satisfies the conditions of (IMT 2000) International Mobile Telecommunications 2000. The 3G services provide voice and video services across the globe. The applications of 3G are mostly dependent on the quality of the network and infrastructure provided. 4G applications will be personalized while be more personalized and focus will be on the senses of the human beings which will include talking and hearing. The phones will be able to adapt according to the senses of the individuals. 4G will be able to monitor the health of the individuals along with that it will also support tele-geo-processing. Secondly network breakdown can be restored within few hours if 4G is implemented because 4G is much simpler than 3G (Hwang et al, 2007).

Network architecture

The 3G uses a hybrid circuit. This means that 3G uses packet and circuit switching techniques. Circuit switching technique utilizes the connection while the resources are continuously tied up. The packet switching only uses the resources when they are being utilized. 4 networks will only be using Packet technology for all types of connections which will include the voice, video and internet. This will allow for more data accommodation in the same bandwidth allowing more users to be accommodated within the allocated bandwidth. 3G network architecture is based on UMTS which is capable of providing data downloads up to 56Mbits/Sec while maximum download is 22MBits/Sec. Several Radios interfaced including WCDMA were offered in 3G (Hwang et al, 2007).

Data throughput

4G technology is capable of data transfer at a higher speed which will be reducing the delay in the data sent/received online. Multiple Video calls can be conducted from various online locations. 3G technology is purely dependent on the WCDMA and CDMA for the data. On the other side 4G uses MAI (Multiple Access Interface) and ISI (Inter Symbol Interference), these two services helps in reducing the bit error rates during data transfer. MCCDMA will be the basis for the 4G networks as it combines the CDMA and OFDM (Hwang et al, 2007)

User perceptions

User perceptions regarding 4G are that, it will be expensive in developing countries because of expensive licensing and approval costs associated with it. Secondly people in developed countries have been able to access the internet anywhere and are able to continue their activities anywhere, online, which will include education, business and other online programs. Data connectivity will improve and speed will increase (Ergen, 2009).
