Introduction

Yoga is an indispensable tool to address the problem of stress and anxiety, and perfectly complements any medical or psychological treatment. While the goal of Yoga itself is reaching an inner state of peace and harmony deep through various practices, it is still usable for specific therapeutic purposes. Whatever people starting in the practice of Yoga are always much more than they initially expected. Yoga provides one of the most comprehensive and effective solutions to this problem (Alter, 2004). The practice of Yoga is the only therapy for stress, but the most natural. The asanas (yoga postures) and pranayama (yogic breathing), practiced together allow to achieve high energy in the body, stimulating cells and relaxing the muscle tension.

The effect on the mind takes longer to be registered because yoga gives to the causes and not just the symptoms of stress. With regular practice the ways that distract the mind to the external environment, are brought to the inner calming the restless mind. When the stress level is high, it is sometimes difficult to achieve in the position effect, in this case, with implements recommended practice can achieve the benefits of the asanas in a relaxed manner (Fields, 2001). We all develop ways to live with the stress checking and minimizing its effects, with varying degrees of success. Stress is not a modern phenomenon has always existed with us. Our ancestors may not have the level of pressure required life today with its modern technology, yet the ordinary events of daily life can cause confusion and inner turmoil.

What is stress and anxiety?

Stress is a relatively recent research that involves several disciplines such as medicine, biology, psychiatry and psychology, thus giving us an idea of the many facets involved. The concept of stress is associated with a response that occurs in the person and involves various dimensions of it. This involves biological, physical and psychological aspects of individual and social interaction with others. This is a person's response to an effort that is felt by it as overflowing with their abilities or threatening physical or psychological and social. The person responds with herself completely, being particularly notable the body's response, which is physiologically and psychologically prepared to deal with such an effort (Feuerstein, 1998).
