Introduction

Medieval style is a typical style of the Victorian because they endowed them with a ready-made British hertitage. These diverse styles ranged from heavily carved pieces in Norman and Gothic style, through pieces painted with Knights and Ladies to glittering, heavily encrusted furniture inspired by 14th century. One of the most interesting object is The Yatman Cabinet which was designed by William Burges (1827_1881), made by Hardland and Fisher for H.G.Yatman, painted by Edward John Poynter ( 1836_1919) William Burges ( 1827-1881) was an English architect and designer. The greatest of the Victorian art architects, Burges sought in his work an escape from 19th century industrialisation and a return to the values, architectural and social of an imagined medieval England. His range encompassed some of the most splendid examples of mid and late Victorian Gothic revival buildings, furniture, stained glass, jewellery and metal work. The painter Sir Edward John Poynter, 1st Baronet ( 1836_1919) was an English painter, designer, draughtsman and art administrator. He was born in Paris, educated at Ipswich School and Brighton College before studying in London, in Rome. He became the best known of his large historical paintings such as Israel in Egypt (1867) , according to Wikipedia. This cabinet was designed to resemble a house with four painted panels of classical sences across the middle, three at the bottom and ornate designs containing columns, porcupines, profile portraits. Looking at this design we can see that Burges was inspired by a medieval cabinet and it was really great in combination with paintings portraying human activities to more closely match the medieval spirit.
