The 5ps model of leadership is a process which is divided in to 5 parts (Pryor, M. G., 1998). The parts include purpose, perspective, presence, process and people. In the current scenario, the 5ps model has to be applied to the XYZ hospital.
Purpose
It is obvious that the first priority of the hospital should have been the patient satisfaction. Every team including various departments in the hospital should have been given clear instructions along with a benchmark of what has to be achieved. A new environment is initiated in this part, leading to a better and informed patient response. Every department should have been provided with simple and understandable instructions which should have given them with the direction they need. The nursing staff should have been given a sample to consider as the basic instructions to work upon. They would consult this sample at the time of making decisions.
A check should have been present at every level and every action taken by the staff. Furthermore, most of the cleaning staff should have been fired by now and new staff should have been brought in. A clear job description would have been highlighted to this staff and a strict supervision by the senior management was required. Apart from these steps, the systems should have been maintained to make it more user-friendly and less stuck up as to facilitate the response of the patients by tracking their medical history and records.
Principle
After a strict focus and direction towards the product, the senior management should have tried to make their employees understand their roles and their contribution matters to the hospital, especially to the department of nursing and the cleaning staff. The cleaning and the nursing staff need to understand their roles and not just given a sample to work upon. They should have been provided with the information that how much their work contributes to the overall success of the hospital.
What the CEO should have done was to make the staff aware of his presence. He should have gone out himself on random rounds and just give a few people some instructions in loud voices or even asking for water. The purpose was to ensure that his voice was being heard and that the staff should be on their toes to perform the best they could.
Process
Every process needs to continuous improvements. This is what the CEO should have done. He should have ensured the improvements in all the processes, especially in nursing as well as the cleaning staff. This would have ensured a higher productivity from the staff along with better performances and fewer complaints. Every change in the process is analyzed first, determining why the change is needed and what the consequences will be. This ensures that in the future, none of the processes go back to the initial stage.
People
The CEO should have made a better connection with his staff. This would have given the staff more confidence and they would have felt empowered ...
