Work-related stress and productivity

Introduction

The purpose of an organization is to make profits so that the wealth of the shareholders can be maximized. In order to be a profitable entity, an organization needs its workforce to be as productive as possible. It is the responsibility of the management to ensure that the workforce has a perfect workplace that encourages and rewards productivity. No one in the world works without any incentives in place, which is why the management has to create a performance-related reward structure so that everyone could work efficiently. The work-related stress seems to be one of the worst problems that workers have to face as it drastically affects their mental and physical capabilities, which in turn can decrease the personal and organizational productivity at a devastating rate (Stranks 2005, p. 82).

There are many reasons behind the stress at workplace. Some of the organizations hire a small number of people and assign them loads of work that is not possible be done. The workers are often under stress to meet unachievable deadlines, which in turn can drastically affect their mental capacity because of the over involvement. The mental disorder is associated with emotional disorder, which can impair a person's judgment capacity. This impairment can be a result of some psychological illness and can lead to a chronic strain in the personal life of a worker (Cox, Griffiths & Rial-González 2000, p. 90). The workers can feel stressed out, which make them unable to give their 100% at work and lead to a considerable decrease in organizational productivity (Williams & Cooper 2002, p. 35).

Background to the problem/issue

The work-related stress at workplace is the most discussed problem in the corporations today. The issue has raised some controversial debates as it pointed out that it is the organization that inflicts this distress in the workers. The organization is blamed for being oversensitive for its profits, which leads to an overload of work-related responsibilities for the workers. It has been seen that there is a growing conflict between the organizational interests and the employees' interests because of the growing concerns at the employees' end. The organizations are unable to cater the needs of the employee, which is not helpful for the employees. The lack of feedback can irritate and de-motivate an employee as he doesn't find it worthy to give his 100% to the organization.

From the observations conducted by most of the researchers in the field, it is concluded that there are a lot of factors that can negatively affect a person's working capability. Most of the analysts affiliate the stress to the politics, uneven organizational structure, uncertainty and lack of feedback that exists at the workplace. The workers can feel stressed out if they find out that they are unable to meet the demands of the management and show utter stress at home by ignoring familial responsibilities ((Danna & Griffin 1999, ...
