Introduction

The impact of workplace design on organizational efficiency and occupier satisfaction has been the subject of extensive research and analysis. A variety of workplace forms for commercial offices have been derived from the application of what have become known as integrated workplace strategies (IWS), a concept introduced in 1993 by the CRE 2000[1, p. 1]. This system combines the nature of the physical settings, the information technology that supports it, the nature of work patterns and processes, and the organizational culture and management. These strategies have been developed as workplace design solutions, and adopted and adapted by organizations to enhance the pursuit of productive performance, superior operational efficiency and reduced occupancy costs.

This paper explores the theoretical background to the development of these workplace strategies and, by means of a post-occupancy evaluation study of the reconfigured accommodation of an international company, seeks to identify those factors which are most significant for space users and which influence personal and corporate
