Studying is not a naturally occurring skill. Studying is an art that has to be learnt, practiced, and refined. Even students who want to learn and who are eager to do well in college don't always know what to do or how to begin. They may not know how much to study or how to use their time wisely. It may not have occurred to them that different study techniques should be used for different subjects. Many students don't know how to use their textbooks efficiently, particularly the kinds of textbooks encountered in college. They don't know how to make the connection between the textbook and the lectures or how to absorb and retain the information. Many are not prepared for the lecture style of teaching at all (Nancy et al 2009). Furthermore, many potentially good students are deficient in some basic skills; they may not be able to read well enough for college level material; they may not be able to apply appropriate mathematical skills; they may have only a vague nation of English grammar. Too many students have trouble putting their ideas into words so that other people can understand them. The majority of students come to a university with fears (and sometimes actual phobias) about mathematics and science. Not only are they deficient in knowledge in these subjects, but also they actively avoid taking the classes they need in these areas until the last year of their college career.

The ability to communicate one's thoughts clearly, concisely and convincingly — in speaking and in writing — is a key skill in study and in any career based on a college or university education. Yet, although many try to improve their written work, most students give little thought to developing their oral communication skills — until they have to attend their hrs tutorial, introduce a subject in a seminar, or prepare and deliver a short talk or presentation. Good communication skills are needed in everyday life, in study at college or university, and in any career based on such studies. Yet, after more than twelve years at school, many students entering higher education are unable to express their thoughts clearly and effectively in their own language (Kitsantas el 2004). They need to improve their writing and to develop their ability to converse, to discuss, to argue persuasively, and to speak in public. Indeed, employers complain that after a further three years in college or university, many students applying for employment still have poor communication skills (Ives 2008).

Presentation Skills

A good presentation contains many of the same constituents as a good restaurant meal. The participants should be hungry. The chef should be at least competent, if not inspired.
