1.1 Summary of Organization

Downend Builders Ltd (DB) is a civil construction company which was formed in 1992. At the moment, they are engaged in civil engineering contracts external and internal fit outs and core packages. Their core clientele include National Marine Aquarium, Tilcon Concrete in Manchester. Honda, Capital One, and Courage Brewery.

It is an entrepreneur company run by a single family who started the business of civil construction from scratch with little finances and experience. During the past two decades, the organization has witnessed numerous changes in the form of market growth and recession, but it stayed intact and tried their best to never compromise on their professionalism and hard earns trust among its clients.

2.1 Leadership Related Issue

However, for the past two years the company is facing difficulties in terms of the work force inefficiency, declining of profits, high turnover rate, and the inability of management to identify the reasons which are causing such negative changes.

The human resource department of DB was given a task to conduct focus group study of the employees. During these meetings, the HR tried to identify the reasons which resulted in the slowing down of work activity of its employees, and to come up with suitable strategies which can control the emerging situation before and make it in line with organizational vision and long term objectives.

One of the most prominent things emerged from these focus group study was the inability of management to communicate with its employees which results in miscommunication within organization.

Majority of the workers believe that their current managers and board of directors are not able to understand the practical issues they face on their sites on a daily basis. The upper management hardly shows up on the construction sites and gives orders in their comforts of their luxurious board offices. They feel that whenever they try to discuss their personal and professional matters (regarding pay rise or conflict with their supervisors) with their managers their bosses hardly understand their concerns and urge them to concentrate more on work.

The management on the other hand feels that the workers do not realize that the company is passing from a recessionary period in which they have to effectively use resources in order to generate liquidity in their accounts. They feel that they are not in the position to provide incentives to their employees and persuade them to resolve their conflict among themselves since the management and other serious problems in the form of client retention.

Almost majority of the participants concluded that the lack of communication and dialogues between the management and the workers is fueling employee dissatisfaction and persuading them to look outside of DB for professional opportunities.
