Discrimination against Woman in the Workplace

Discrimination against Woman in the Workplace

Introduction

The discrimination in employment is a common act that adversely affects the Women of all the societies. Some employers harass their female employees by sexual torture or else they are fired from their work. The laws have also been introduced by the federal government in order to cope with such difficult situation that often arises at the workplace (Vescio & Brittany, 2009). The legal strategies have also been evolved so that sexual discrimination can be controlled. These legal strategies are designed in terms of laws by the governments and law firms.

Discrimination in employment and occupation takes many forms, and occurs in all types of work context. It involves a different treatment because of certain characteristics such as race, color or sex, and generates deterioration in the equality of opportunity and treatment. Discrimination produces and reinforces inequalities (Dipboye, 2005). Limits the freedom of people to develop skills and to choose and realize their professional and personal aspirations regardless of qualifications. Professionalism and competence cannot be developed, there is no reward for the work and creates a sense of humiliation, frustration and helplessness.

The elimination of discrimination in the workplace is fundamental to social justice, which is at the center of the mandate of the ILO. Essential to the concept of decent work for all women and men, which is based on the notion of equal opportunity for all who work or seek employment and livelihood, whether workers, employers or independent workers in the formal economy or informal. The elimination of discrimination is an indispensable part of any viable strategy for poverty reduction and sustainable economic development (Vescio & Brittany, 2009).

Discussion

Discrimination contrary to women in the workplace is displayed in a kind of modes, extending from the sexual harassment to the exclusion of women from "the vintage boys' club" where foremost conclusions are made. Thus, in spite of the huge application of women in the workplace and the expanding figures of women in mid-level managerial places, top-level places stay as vague to women today as they were more than ten years ago (Acker, 1990). Working in a world overridden by male decision-makers and their established practices, women meet a kind of obstacles impeding their rush to the peak of their careers. Few women have organized to shatter the "glass ceiling" the notion utilized to recount the obstacles impeding women from top-level positions. The consequences of the discrimination on women are manifested in the erosion of their persona and the decasualization of thriving women in alignment to "fit in" with their male counterparts. The psychological consequences of discrimination on one-by-one women have grave sociological repercussions: women with feminine attributes depart their work, departing desexualized women to assist as forms for feminine newcomers, therefore perpetuating the cycle of male domination and discrimination (Clark, Glenn & John, 2002).
