Introduction

William Herbert Sheldon was a talented man, who is considered a pseudo scientist, a constitutional psychologist and a numismatist. He worked on the concepts of the relationship between body type and temperament. He segmented the body into three main types i.e. ectomorph, mesomorph, endomorph. Ectomorph is the body type with lean and weak muscles and bone structure. Endomorph is the opposite of ectomorph and with large bone structure, along with round and fat body structure, whereas, the mesomorph is the control or the ideal body type in terms of shape and size.

General Personal and Family Background

William Herbert Sheldon was born on 19 Nov, 1898 in Warwick, Rhode Island. His parents were, William Herbert and Mary Abby Greene, and both were related to respectable New England families like Carders and the Remingtons. His family was well off until one of the partners in the family run business deceived them, and ran off with all the money. Two of the oldest sisters of Sheldon were lost Diphtheria, after which his parents had three more children of whom Sheldon was the youngest one. Although, his family lost their business and money, though Sheldon`s father managed to keep the family homestead, which had been in the family for over a century, and supported the family by working as a jeweler.

Childhood

Sheldon`s childhood was like any ordinary rural child`s childhood. Though, they were poor, but still managed to cultivate half acre of land to grow, carrots, peas, onions, tomatoes, potatoes, and corn. His father was a fervent fisherman and hunter, along with wide range of other interests and talents. His father was a shooter of national statute and was nicknamed Hawkeye. Sheldon was much inspired by his father and nature in his boyhood years; he also wanted to be an exceptional shot and to be nicknamed another Hawkeye. However, a childhood accident left a scar underneath his eye which made him unable to become a perfect shot. Nevertheless, he still managed to hit a small marble thrown in the air with his .22 caliber rifle. Besides shooting, Sheldon had keen interest in the wildlife as well. It was a life accustomed to natural settings.

Teenage

During his teenage years he was working for the state as a junior ornithologist, where his admiration and appreciation for the early American Cent had a growing reputation.
