The book begins following a plane crash which left a pilot dead and a bunch of boys aged five to twelve, scattered throughout the tropical island. The boys were evacuated from England, where nuclear war has occurred. When they fled, the plane is attacked and the pilot parachutes away. Ralph meets Piggy, and they find little shell sinks (Golding 12). Ralph blows into the sink and boys gather at a central point. There are singers and boarding boys' school. They are going to elect a leader and decided to start a fire and begin to explore the island.
Lord of flies was written as a response to the novel Coral Island and in many ways the anti-thesis of that book. In Coral Island, a group of boys become stranded on an island in the Coral Sea and learn to live happily in peace and harmony with each other and their environment.
Thus Coral Island attempts to demonstrate that people are born good at heart and that evil is an external force is present in a world that seduces again innocent people (Baker James 60). After liberation from the temptations created by adults and society, boys can live happily in a peaceful utopia.
Lord of the Flies "takes the opposite view: that evil comes from within. Golding message is that human nature is evil side, and that without punishment, to keep it under control of society will degenerate into a barbarous anarchy. Lord of the Flies illustrates this theme through the story of a group of boys stranded on an island that has to overcome not only the natural difficulties of the island, but the difficulties of their own inherent human nature. Throughout the novel we are witnessing the gradual decline of morality, separate boys' and hence reducing their potential to build a society in general.Setting
Lord of the Flies takes place on the island, which Golding never gives the exact location. Although he does not tell us where the island is, he describes it in detail. He said that he was a jungle at one end, with rocky hill above it. On the opposite side is the lagoon where the boys go to swim and where they first met after the accident (Thayer Marion 89). Near there, on the mountain, is a platform where it was decided to fire will burn in the hope of salvation. It was in an ideal position with ocean views, thus allowing any passing aircraft or ships in their place and save them. It was on this mountain that the parachutist was also seen boys and takes the monster. Domestically, the jungle served many purposes. In the dense jungle, the food was plentiful and the plants serve as a means of salvation for Ralph during his run from Jack. Simon stayed there during its stage of insanity, and use plants to create a shelter.
