Introduction

Technological advancements has become of the major concer4n for the modern world. Technological advancements and improvements are good and sign of progress towards the new generation of technology, but too much emphasize and use of technology is threat for the humanity. We have become completely dependent on technology and therefore there are various negative aspects associated with this. Mobile phone, internet and email are some examples which have replaced human interaction with these technological resources. This concept is also considered by Sherry Turkle and Adam Gopnic, which shared some points in their discussion and at various points there are deviations, but one most important aspect is that both these analysts consider the over advancement of technology as a challenge for the social interaction. Another worst impact of technology and the fast pace of life have resulted in binding every individual in the race of achievements and recognitions. People do not have time for their families and friends and every relation and connection is now based on the connectivity to bridge the gap between their physical connections.

Thesis Statement

Technological advancements have resulted in making us more occupied with these technologies and then provide us an opportunity to build walls to create our own spaces.

Discussion

One of the main ideas, which are shared by both the writers, is that, there is concept of “virtual intimacy” which creates a threat for the future continuity of the relationship and social interactions. According to Sherry Turkle in her book Alone Together, virtual intimacy has resulted in to “degrade our relation of the other kind” (p.273). This provides that after connectivity there is disconnection between relations and interactions. This concept clearly reflects the ideology behind disturbance of life created with these technological advancements. Isolation and loneliness is also very clearly reflected with the title of the book. The same idea is shared by Adam Gopnik, in his article, “Bumping into Mr. Ravioli” according to which, the new generation is the generation of “virtual call and echo” (p.158). It is therefore, provided that these technological advancements have resulted in creating the walls between us. These concepts are discussed with two different perspectives by Turkle and Gopnik.

Turkle (2011) discussed the concept of robots as the science fiction androids to do all the households work as maids. This also involves the ideology of dealing with the solution for all the difficulties and as a substitute “The machine could be preferable-for any number of reasons-to what we currently experience in the sometimes messy, often frustrating, and always complex world of people” (p.5). This provides the concept of having more space and disconnection with people and close relation with the robot.
