Why should we Work?

INTRODUCTION

The following essay discusses as to why different people work and as to what are the reason behind them working in different scenarios. In order to understand these different scenarios in which the people work, it is important that we analyse the published work of different individuals in order to have a better idea of what goes on in life when the people have to work. The main focus of this essay would be to look upon the issues or in other words the reasons which brings one to work.

WORKERS BY RICHARD RODRIGUEZ

The topic of the first published article that have been analysed is of “Workers” written by “Richard Rodriguez” who belongs to a Mexican immigrant family and was born in the state of San Francisco. The article revolves around the author being searching for a summer job during his college days for the reason of earning him some good money and to get indulge in a new experience. The reason for the author to work as shown in the article has been indicated about proving to his dad that he has as mentioned in the article, to learn the meaning of real life by actually living the life like a “worker”.

As it has been said in the article, “I worked with excitement that first morning - and all the days after”, this means that the work which was supposed to be tough for the author at his age and with no previous experience of being a worker, the author instead enjoyed doing that work and actually did it because he wanted to learn that experience not like the other workers, who were only doing the work as a profession and were doing it as a form of earning.

The example given above from the article shows that the author was working because of a reason, not just because he wanted to pass the time or because it was obligatory to work to earn but because the author wanted to experience that how it feels to be a worker, the experience of working like all other workers and of living their hard physical life. This shows the very reason as to why the author wanted to work as a worker.

This shows that the people are willing to work if they are given a reason to do that work not only because they are getting paid for it, but instead a reason in a more deeper context that somehow relates to them and gives them a purpose to work for, either a short or a long term one (Rodriguez, 1982).

THE IMPORTANCE OF WORK BY GLORIA STEINEM

The topic of the second article that has been analysed in the context of supporting the main purpose of this paper is of “the importance of work” written by “Gloria Steinem”. The article highlights the fact of gender biasness that had been present in the society for long, mostly in the working environment.
