Coastal wetlands are shallow lands immersed in sea or freshwater water which give habitat to various species of plants and animals. They are generally found near deltas and estuaries, where rivers merge into the sea. Wetlands can be in the form of marshes, swamps, or vegetated depressions. Coastal wetlands cover almost 40 million acres in the United States, with the majority located in the south-east region .
