Why Do We Need to Regulate Gun Control?

Why Do We Need to Regulate Gun Control?

Introduction

Incidents related to gun control have increased a lot in the recent past with the number of killings going sky high in a short time. This has become a concern for people living in the country. People are now more scared for the safety of their children and family. The recent debate on gun control started after the incident in a movie theater on July 20, 2012 in Aurora, Colorado that killed 12, 10 of them on the spot and injured 58 also with every injured getting shot (http://edition.cnn.com). The problem being discussed is possession of guns that results in gun related crimes including homicides. If stricter laws are made making it harder to acquire guns for criminals and mentally ill people, then gun related crime will also go down a lot. There are answers to all the concerns raised by people having anti-gun control opinions.

Thesis Statement

Stricter gun control regulation is the solution to the problem of increasing gun related crimes.

Discussion

Problem

As of early January 2013, there have

been more than 400 gun related deaths in the US (http://www.alternet.org) since 26 people were killed in Sandy Hook Elementary School in Sandy Hook in Newtown, Connecticut.

There have been many such incidents killing people including students. Another such incident took place near Texas A&M University on August 13, 2012. A gunfire lasting half an hour killed 3 including a constable (http://edition.cnn.com).

These mass killings started in the country on February 22nd 2012 and even included educational institutions like Chardon High School, Chardon, Ohio; Oikos University, Oakland, California; and Sandy Hook Elementary School, Newtown, Connecticut (http://www.cbsnews.com).

Chicago, the biggest city in the state of Illinois grabbed the headlines for the many gun related crimes that shook the city killing 506 people which was a 16 percent increase compared to the previous year. Also, this was the first time since 2008 that the number of killings crossed 500 in Chicago (http://articles.chicagotribune.com).

The problem here seems to be the possession of guns which causes their wrong use. Possession seems to be a problem because according to the latest figures, there are 310 million guns in the country with a population of 307 million people which makes it more than a gun per person. Even though there are laws that regulate the keeping of these arms but our argument is that tighter laws are needed. A lot of people want new laws to control gun abuse. The problem of gun control may also have resulted because President Barack Obama when running for elections in 2008, encouraged better gun control thus soaring the sales of guns in expectation of a stricter regulation. It may have happened because of fears of crackdown after gun related incidents. Also, again after Obama's re-election, gun sales have shot up again because stricter laws are expected.

Solution

People at times argue that to stop crimes because of guns, gun owners should be held responsible and not the guns but our argument is that they ...
