Introduction
Dialysis technicians perform a very important job as they remove wastes, salts, and extra water from the blood of patients whose kidneys do not work properly. These technicians also called hemodialysis technicians. Their job includes monitoring of dialysis machine, preparing and assisting patients, and checking whole process. If there is any error during this process, it may result in the spread of viruses, bacteria and can even cause problems for the patients. Therefore, proper education is very essential for dialysis technicians, in order to avoid any error.
Review of Literature
Rao et al, (2013)
There are various researches that highlight need and importance of proper education for the dialysis technicians such as Rao et al, (2013), conducted research about the prevalence of hepatitis C virus infection in the patients under treatment of hemodialysis. According to research conducted by Rao et al (2013), it is investigated that patients under the hemodialysis are infected with the hepatitis C virus, five times more than other people. From the research, it is identified that most of patients with hepatitis C virus are infected due to the transmission of this virus during the process of dialysis. It is also observed that safety precautions and hygiene factors are usually neglected during the process of dialysis.
According to Rao et al (2013) there were many lapses during the process of “preparation, handling, and administration of parenteral medications” (Rao et, al, 2013, p.101). According to this research, in order to prevent future outbreak of this disease, there is a need to provide proper education and guidance to the dialysis facility staff. This research also proposed some information based on the Infection Control Issues Identified at Facility A, Maryland 2007-2009. According to this study, there can be education and guidance about the hand hygiene and use of gloves, use of clean supplies, and careful process of dialysis in order to avoid the spread of virus and germs (Rao et, al, 2013, p.103). Blood spill must be cleaned properly with antiseptic; cleaning and disinfection of dialysis station and dialysis machine, and proper handling of wastes are very essential (Rao et, al, 2013, p.103). Thus, it is essential that basic information must be provided to the dialysis facility staff.
Rebmann and Barnes (2011)
Rebmann and Barnes (2011) presented an article, “Preventing infections in hemodialysis”, which is an executive summary of the APIC Hemodialysis Infection Elimination Guide. This article is also focused on the prevention and precautions for diseases and virus transformation during the process of hemodialysis. There are various recommendations and preventions for disease control by proving proper education and guidance to the dialysis technicians. Rebmann and Barnes (2011) also discussed pathology and epidemiology of hemodialysis patients in order to provide assistance and guidance to avoid risks factors. This article also summarized risk factors associated with the dialysis process and patients such as “exposure to invasive medical devices, immunosuppression, ...
