1.2 Background of the Research

According to the Mental Health Foundation (2009) a variety of mental health problems affect one in four people living in United Kingdom (UK) in any one year. However, the majority of them will not be diagnosed with severe and enduring mental health problems. The term mental health problems relates to a range of difficulties which affect an individual's ability to cope with their life, and may vary from anxiety, depression to more psychotic symptoms. The diagnoses of long term, persistent mental health problems include schizophrenia, bipolar disorders, clinical and severe depression. The symptoms of severe and enduring mental health problems can impact upon an individual's personal life, causing poor job or school performance, which is accompanied by significant social and occupational dysfunction (Rethink, 2010). The onset of the mental illness occurs mostly in early adult years, which has enormous impact upon an individual's education. It is very common for these individuals to encounter difficulties in completing high school, which leads to reduced opportunities to enter postsecondary education or employment (Robson et al 2010). Many of these people had a few unsuccessful attempts in entering school or work, which reinforced their low confidence and self esteem still further (Gutman et al, 2009).
