Abstract

This paper discusses about the chosen domestic terrorist organization, the Weatherman. There are different segments in this paper that present discussion upon terrorism and its modern day relevance to America. Furthermore, a detailed account of the Weathermen has too been discussed.

This paper in essence highlights the complex nature and dimensions of terrorism and its modern day implications to America. Today, American nation is economically suffering from a crippling economy, government shutdown and a potential possibility of entering into war with Iran. The previous wars in Afghanistan and Iraq in the past decade have proved fatal for the economy and for the public. Therefore, it can be stated that modern day terrorism with respect to America comes from foreign terrorist organizations. Although, the Weathermen dissolved in the late 1970's, yet it is remembered for its radical movement and its attitude towards bombing the government for its involvement in invading South-Pacific nations, such as Vietnam. However, the group soon disintegrated because of its lack of unified vision amongst the supporters, which reduced its operations and directions strictly to disarming and wreaking havoc to dissuade the government. Furthermore, this paper concludes upon the note about of the relevance of the Weathermen ideology could be of any significance in today's context.

Introduction

This paper highlights one domestic American terrorist organization, Weatherman, in relation with the U.S. Homeland Security. According to Reese (2013) defining homeland security is not an easy task. However, the idea of homeland security first came forth after the September 2001 terrorist attacks in New York. Before that time the U.S. authorities were greatly involved in managing state related issues through law enforcement, national defense and law enforcement aspects. However, 9/11 brought about a strategic process into how America wanted to defend itself against any possible threats. This led to the establishment of Department of Homeland Security-DHS. The mission of this organization is to secure the American nation from the various threats that it face. In addition, the DHS has a strong employee base of over two hundred and forty thousand. This employee base encompasses wide array of jobs ranging from border security to aviation. Coupled with, responding to cyber threats to chemical weapon inspection and providing emergency response. The department is also dedicated to providing different trainings and resources to the American citizens for empowering them in identifying any potential threat taking place. The department was formed in 2002 and entails twenty-two different federal agencies and departments in to one integrated agency (Dhs.gov, 2013).

According to Reese (2013) DHS receives nearly fifty-two percent of its funding from the policy makers and the congress, who are main entities responsible for the department's funding. However, it was these policymakers that urged for a government entity that deals with large scale terrorist attacks after the 2001 attacks.
