Abstract

In this research paper I have I dentified the Native American cultural group in my state, highlighting the community health problem these people are facing. Although there are many health problems which are faced by them, but the main disease I have discussed in my paper is Diabetes as it is one of the major casuses of deaths in the Native Americans. Relevant data and statistics have been obtained from the health department in order to have a clear insight on the issue. I have then identified the resources that are currently proving the Native Americans services and are trying to resolve there health issues. In the next part of this research, I have identified and discusses various barriers that refrains the Native Americans health issues to be solved. Along with identifying the major stakeholders involved in solving their issues. And finally based on my conclusion I have made three recommendations .

Introduction

When a government takes initiatives in order to prevent its people from different cultural backgrounds from suffering from any kind of diseases and have programs which would create awareness and promotes good health, it is referred to as public health. This would not only increase the life expectancy of people living in the country, but the people will also live a better quality life (Turnock, Bernard J, 2007). According to the Indian Health Service (IHS 2012), there has been a rapid growth in the population of the Native Americans, as per the figures given by the census. This population mostly comprises of the younger generation. The Native Americans are facing a number of problems, these includes unemployment issues, poverty, housing issues and no access to good health care facility, and other social economic related issues. Besides these several issues prevailing in the Native Americans, many of the tribes have been able to overcome these issues as much as possible through optimal utilization of their resources. Native Americans have been influenced by the western approach of health programs. It is crucial for a health program to relate to the culture it is designed for. And health related issues concerning that the community should be addresses according to their own culture. This will help the community being addressed to have a better understanding of health related issues and its cure and preventions (American Indian/Alaska Native Profile, 2009).

Discussion

As stated by (Orlandi, 2005) there are many diseases common in the Native Americans, such as HIV/Aids, Stroke, Alcoholism, Drug use, but out of those the most common one is Diabetes, this causes a major risk to their lives. There are two types of diabetes, Type One are not that common in the Native Americans, however, Type 2 diabetes is very common due to which those who are suffering from it are at high risk.
