Water shortages in the southeast England

Thesis Statement

“Availability and consumption of water should match each other to resolve the water shortage in southeast England”

Background

Due to drought conditions for more than a year, the water reservoirs had less than 40 % water creating severe water shortage problems in the south east England. Keeping in view the rigorousness of the problem, the government's environment agency put forth that five new reservoirs are required to be built over the coming 25 years to combat the rising problem. It was revealed by the water companies that the public was treating water as a plentiful thing consuming it in high quantities. Efforts were made by the water companies to make the people reduce the quantity of water they were consuming. The government imposed restrictions on car washing and watering of sport pitches. Moreover, hosepipes were introduced and bills were increased. However, efforts made by government to reduce the consumption of water by public were condemned by some pressure groups. They attributed the water shortage with the inefficiency of water companies to meet demand. These companies were also ostracized for the amount of water that was wasted due to leakage in pipes. The companies managed to save 35 million liter per day by repairing leakages, but still a lot was being lost due to old pipes. Estimates have shown that the problem can worsen in the coming years due to the construction of thousands of homes in the southeast England. It has been decided by the government that water meters will be installed in the new houses.
