Reflective Essay: Ward Management

This essay reflects that a nurse should posses an administrative quality and should be competent and confident enough to manage the ward. The purpose of this reflection is to analyze my strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats regarding ward management.

Description

Along with providing care nurse have several other duties. According to the Royal College of Nursing, nursing skills must aptly provide direct patient care. Nurses must possess a portfolio of numerous skills including leadership skills, experience, empowering patients, communication skills, teamwork and compassion (Royal College of Nursing, 2003). That is why management of ward is also comes under the responsibilities of nurses. I have to manage the cardiac ward. The people at administrative positions have a responsibility to practice in an ethical and efficient pattern. They should strictly follow the rules and regulations regarding administrative activities. If the higher staff follow and strictly obey the rules and policies of an organization and apply all the standards while decision making process, it will create a very great and good impact on the middle and lower staff, motivate them to work whole heartedly and will raise the sense of safety thereby minimize the problems generated by ethical issues such as privacy and confidentiality, that are shown in routine nursing activities.

Feelings

As one of my learning outcome I have to learn about the ward management, so I read topics related to nursing management, cardiac unit and nursing, management of changes that are required for the betterment of cardiac ward and so on. This enhanced my knowledge a lot and I hope will help me in future for making my nursing practice efficient and effective.
