Vulnerability

Background of the Case

Miss Jaya is a woman who never got married, has no kids and lives alone in a bungalow. She was a practicing Hindu lady as she was from India. Miss Jaya, as of her age may be considered as weak and prone to travel and falls and impaired mobility (impaired mobility is the state in which a person has a restriction in independent, decided physical movement of the body). She also has vision and speech problems. The age also has exclusive health care requirements, not just to the increased disability and illnesses but also to the several social and physical effects of her age. This is one of the reasons of her vulnerability.

She has no support of family as she was living alone. As she was an Indian national she was not good at English. There was no support of people around her. Her parents were not alive. She strongly believes in Hinduism, she might be vulnerable for the reason that of her cultural background, as English is not her mother language, she might be fearful as well as confused concerning attitudes and comments towards her. On several occasions the old people are ignored for the reason that society tends to believe they have nothing of worth to say, so their beliefs are not lecture to. At old age people become more mentally, socially, and physically dysfunctional. The approaches towards older inhabitants are regarded as used commodities, burden to culture and lacking in value in the work or family situations.

When Ms Jaya was in a hospital ward, she became very embarrassed and upset as a male nursing staff entered her bathroom unexpected, when she was taking a bath with the help of a female nurse as she had she requested not to be cared for by male staff. This incident was the reason for her vulnerability.

Discussion

The term vulnerability has been widely used in recent years expressing different perspectives of interpretation. In general, vulnerability to diseases and adverse situations of life is distributed differently according to individuals, regions and social groups and is related to poverty, with economic crises and the educational level. This develops the concept of vulnerability in three areas: individual vulnerability or understanding of personal behaviour, which refers to the degree and quality of information that individuals have about health issues, their development and implementation in practice; understanding the context social or social vulnerability, which evaluates obtaining the information, access to the media, the availability of cognitive resources and materials, the power to participate in policy decisions and institutions, and programmatic vulnerability, which evaluates programs to meet to disease control, beyond the level of quality and commitment of the institutions, resources, management and monitoring of programs at different levels of care (Ulrich, & Grady, 2002, p. 71).
