Introduction

Formerly the opulent winter villa of wealthy industrialist James Deering of International Harvester, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens offers visitors an opportunity to experience one of the most beautiful estates in Miami. A great spot for a day trip from Doral West Apartments, the lavish 1916 Italianate mansion in the Coconut Grove area looks out on the glittering expanse of Biscayne Bay and was crafted by over 1,000 workers, many of whom were imported from Europe and the Caribbean. Much of the artwork, furniture, and tapestries from Deering's collection are still in the house (Maher: 25). The landscaped gardens feature elaborate landscaping with lush tropical plants, fountains, and walkways.

Located in the Coconut Grove district, the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens was originally built as a winter villa for businessman James Deering in the early 1900s. Today it serves as a museum, with a wide variety of art from the 15th to the 19th century. The atmosphere is a key part of the experience, with much of the original house intact and showcasing a neat assortment of vintage furniture (Kathryn & Harwood: 74).

Though for many travelers, the gorgeous gardens are the unquestioned highlight of any trip here. Frommer's says, "Outside, lush formal gardens, accented with statuary, balustrades, and decorative urns, front an enormous swath of Biscayne Bay. Definitely take the tour of the rooms, but immediately thereafter, you will want to wander and get lost in the resplendent gardens."The Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is located just a mile southwest of downtown Miami. Public transport is available with easy access from the Vizcaya Metrorail station, but there's also free parking should you choose to drive. Admission is $15 for adults and $6 for children ages 6 through 12. The museum is open every day of the year except for Christmas from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

History

The mansion is located next to Biscayne Bay County Miami Dade County , in the U.S. state of Florida and was built between 1914and 1916 by architects F. Burrar Hoffman (1882-1980) who designed the buildings, Colombian Diego Suarez (1888-1974), who planned the gardens, and Paul Chaflin , (1873-1959) who was the artist who oversaw the work (Witold Rybczynski & Laurie: 19).
