Visions for change: Crime and justice in the twenty-first century

Abstract

This paper makes an asserted position on crime and justice that crime and justice have become inevitable parts of human society in the twenty first century. Socio-economic analysis of society indicates that a robust justice system that is approachable by all members of society is necessary to beat crime in the twenty-first century. Analysis of nature of crime and crime rates in different countries suggest need for robust justice system that ensures that crime preventing agencies play their role actively with due responsibility and diligence. It discusses the Juvenile justice system of the 21st century by referring to scholarly articles and literary works on the subject of Crime and Justice in the twenty first century. Globalization has changed the definition of crime and its types. In modern times illegal transfer of money that is done from outside the legal banking channel is considered illegitimate and is referred to as money laundering. The different philosophies in the justice system are under debate in modern times that have direct and indirect consequences on preventing crime in the society. For example retributive, transforming, restorative justice philosophies; each has different interpretations of dealing with crime and criminal. There is a notion called presumption of innocence that is instrumental in reducing overall costs of justice as societies where proving innocence is the responsibility of criminal defendant has high costs of justice. This paper is an assertion that Crime and justice have become inevitable parts of human society in the twenty first century.

Introduction

One can expect a change in practices and methods of committing crimes motivated by profit as well as new types of criminals, which may be from more diverse layers of society. The technology will also bring changes in the techniques of prevention, detection and investigation. The differences in prohibitions, regulations and taxation between countries create opportunities for transnational crime, but the fundamental nature of this crime will not only change products and services; it seeks to change resources and markets. In crimes of predation, the main change will be new opportunities to commit traditional forms of fraud by means of modern communication. Public safety has become a major concern of the society and, therefore, a question to be resolved by civil servants responsible for providing it, who, despite their efforts, have not been able to curb rising crime in the twenty-first century (Stich, 2008).
