Abstract

Every one of us has played video games in some part of our lives. The field of video and online gaming is vast, dynamic and ever-developing. Video and computer games have been a bone of contention between the parents and their children since 30 years now. It has long been a debatable issue whether these video games should be allowed to play or not. Most parents believe that this activity has thoroughly time wasting; and complain that it rots the brain and results in lethargy. However if we look deep into this topic, we find out that it has both positive and negative aspects attached to it.

Introduction

Violence, in any form, is undesirable and should be condemned. These video games have been blamed by both the media and the communities as one that promotes anti-social inclinations in the children's behavior and compel them to show violent gestures. This is also attributed to the fact that children lack a sense of moral responsibility and judgment about the kind of relationship they should cultivate with the media. The gamers' interaction with the video games is direct with no external support required. This way the video games dictate their codes into the minds of young gamers.

Discussion

Video games are a source of fun and stress relief, owing to the frequency of play and the types of games played. The type of the games played should not, in any way, promote violent behaviors. The media content that is available to the children should be pure of violence and immoral. The parents should encourage their children to engage themselves in outdoor sporting activities like cricket, football, snooker, golf, squash, polo, rugby, swimming, horse riding, etc. these sports promote physical activities and lessens the damaging effects of video games on the mind by engaging the child in different competitions where his abilities are fully utilized.

A healthy lifestyle should be adopted by parents and children alike. Parents should encourage their children to allot a certain time period to each activity in a day. No matter how much busy life seems to get, the parents should take out some time off their work when they can help the child complete homework, read to them a story, solve a puzzle with them, or simply take them out for a walk besides the lake. These activities can fully enrich the child's mental and physical abilities and he/she will turn out to be productive citizens of the country.

Recent studies suggest that, kids in United States play video games at an average of 270 hours per month. It was concluded in research that around 21.4 % school students played video games for 42 hours per month. Furthermore, 70 % school students consider themselves as professional gamer.
