Abstract

Everyone can become a victim of a crime. It does not matter what race, gender, or religion an individual is. Everyone is susceptible of becoming victimized. A few common ways a person can be a victim is by a financial crime, burglary, and sexual battery. There are different reasons as why an individual is targeted by the offender and there are also different reasons as to why an individual is continuously victimized. These different reasons will be reviewed in this paper. There are also studies that will be examined in this paper that have been conducted that state what types of victimization occur in what areas and also what ethnic groups are being targeted. In addition, there are many resources that exist today that can help a person who has become a victim; such as counseling, shelters, and hotlines. In this paper, the multiple resources and shelters that are in Florida will be discussed in regards to what assistance they provide to victims. Additionally, there are various different effects a person can receive after being victimized in relation to their physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Stockholm syndrome is an effect that a victim of being kidnapped can experience. Stockholm syndrome will be discussed more in depth in this paper because it is a common effect of someone being a victim of a kidnapping. Lastly, the paper will discuss what precautions people can take in order to avoid or lessen their chance of becoming a victim themselves. Some of these precautions could be locking up your car, having a security system in your home, avoid areas that are well-known for crime, and not walking alone at night. All in all, this paper will discuss the multiple ways a person can become a victim, the effects a person can have from being a victim, resources available to help victims, and ways a person can avoid becoming a victim.
