Operational Strategy in Vacations Inn

The role of the hospitality industry is the accommodation of guests, accompanied in many cases of other services such as room rental, luggage transportation, feeding and drinking within the housing, etc. To perform this function, hotels should transform some inputs that are facilities, labour and food, in the services that the Customer (outputs). This function of transformation of resources into goods and services for consumption is the object study of the Directorate of Operations. At the strategic level, the objective of the Directors of Operations is involved in finding a sustainable competitive advantage for the hotel. An alternative definition of the operational management defines the operations managers as responsible for the production of goods or services of the organizations. Operations managers make decisions that relate to the role of operations and systems of transformation that is used. Thus, the management of operations is the study of decision making in the operations function. From these definitions it is clear that the process of operations management is to plan, organize, manage personnel, direct and control, in order to achieve optimized production function (Chase, 2006, 23).

They can apply the techniques and methods of Operations Management at the hotel talking about his involvement in what is usually called 5Ps. They are Product, Process, People, Plant and plans.

Product

With respect to the Product, the area of operations should determine the feasibility of its generation, and their costs, delivery time and quality. The product also can improve efficiency and taking into account some aspects of its design traditionally considered by manufacturing firms: standardization of products or supplies, reliability and service security, facilitates the carrying out of product-related operational level. In this sense, some techniques such as value analysis and deployment of quality function can help design services hotel. Moreover, these issues could be related to other operations and decisions especially with the process.

Regarding the process, work study may be useful in improving processes, since it involves a systematic and detailed analysis of all the activities and flows that make up the process in order to achieve improvement. In time, work study facilitates the development and use of a manual of procedures. This manual can standardize the optimal way to perform the most repetitive operations. Once these operations are standardized, they can be applied on the same tools of control (Skinner, 2004, 113).

Statistical Process

In relation to the Personal, in Vacation Inn, as well as other utilities, professionalism of employees is the key to customer satisfaction hence the need for their education and training.
