Concur by experts for laying a gap between nursing educations and nursing practice. Today, technology has made progress, so do technology is assisting the students of nursing to engage in learning situations and then come in contact with patients, which priory was done without any practical technological demonstrations (Distlehorst, Dunnington & Folse, 2000). Multimedia and simulations provide practice opportunities to students of nursing. Simulation is defined as the act of imitation of some real thing available. Simulation is used for many functions like video games, training, testing, and education.
Discussion
Simulation Topic
The topic I would like to shed light on the chest tube management. The chest tube or Chest drain is defined as any catheter that is inserted by chest wall for the removal of air or fluid from the pleural space. Tube thoracotomy or Chest tube (CT) placement is often directed for the treatment of hemothorax, pneumothorax, or pleural effusion subsequent to traumatic injury or thoracic surgery. The chest tube is inserted for the removal of pathological gathering of fluid or air in the pleural space, it allows the formation of imperative negative pressure in the chest, and allows the expansion of lungs completely, thus assisting in normal restoration of ventilation (Rajan, 2012). Any catheter inserted through the chest wall for removing fluid or air from the pleural space are known as a chest tube or chest drain (Daly, Mucha, etal., 1985). Chest tube management is considered to be one of the most essential and imperative clinical practices that every student of nursing should be aware, since if it is not managed appropriately, can cause complications for the patients, resulting in to increased cost of the patient by a longer stay in the hospital and bearing additive hospital expenses. It is necessary for the new nurse to be familiar with the problems that may arise chest tube treatment, and methods of trouble shooting the problem.
Measurement of Learning Outcomes
After the simulation it becomes essential to measure the outcomes of the learning from the methodology. It is observed that after simulation, nursing students should be cable of doing following:
Identification of two anatomical positions for the place of CT and mark indication for every position.
Understanding of different types of chest tube drainage systems.
Setting of equipment and necessary preparation for insertion, removal, and maintenance of the chest tube.
Application of skills and knowledge particular to a chest tube in scenario of simulation.
Learning of complications that may incur in a patient with chest tube and comprehension of nursing interventions imperative at the time.
Executions during Simulation by Students
A Chinese proverb appropriate specifically for the profession of nursing goes as “Tell me, and I will forget. Show me, and I may remember. Involve me, and I will understand.” It is essential for students to have practical practice of the theories learned in the classrooms, before they practically apply to their patients. Admirable means of practicing nursing procedures by the students are simulation ...
