Introduction

Most anthropologists agree that the groups we now call Native Americans arrived between 15,000 and 30,000 years ago from Asia across a land bridge that existed in the Ice Ages connecting Siberia to Alaska (Fuentes, p. 36). They were nomadic tribes, and they migrated southward, looking for food sources and following bisons and mammoths to more temperate regions. As the Ice Ages ended, around 9000 BC, bands became less migratory and different language groups developed. When the European arrived in the sixteenth century, more than two thousand languages were spoken.
