Introduction

Urban development is also called as urban planning which includes planning for land use and transportation systems in order to make the structure of a city or town better and developed. Urban renewal is included in urban development which deals with issues such as lack of investment and decay in specific regions. Aspects such as aesthetics, land use, transportation, safety and unkempt buildings all influence the planning of the city or town's structure (Helaine, n.d., p.1). Planners of the city manage the city's growth by creating zoning laws which helps in recognizing the way in which land can be used. Planners of the urban development regulate building's aspects i.e. the uses and the size of recently constructed buildings. Urban development ensures safety of the city and develops the city intelligently through preventing from the issues of water consumption and overcrowding. Urban development takes the nature of beauty or aesthetics into consideration (Helaine, n.d., p.1). Urban development also helps in reducing the clutter of the cities and encompasses conventional architectural style. Urban planners consider the visitors and resident's safety in urban development of a city or town. Transportation system is the crucial issue in the urban regions which is also sorted out in urban development. Urban development incorporates the planning of decreasing or increasing traffic, parking areas and other traffic patterns (Helaine, n.d., p.1).

The Historical Development of Planning Systems in the UK

The London's population was of million people in the early 1801 which was far greater than the population of other cities or regions of England. The population of London reached to 2,490,000 by the year 1851. The population of London was jam-packed into small spaces. The urbanization's introduction arrived with negativity on the population which caused several health problems because of poor sanitation due to overcrowding that produced cholera epidemic (Friends of Earth Scotland, 2008, p.15). The economy of the city was threatened because of these epidemic issues because employee's performance was inefficient due to poor health conditions. Advancement in the medical knowledge resulted in sanitary condition's improvement. In the year 1846, the first law was passed for the prevention of cellars and basements to be used as homes (Permitted Development, 2008, p.1). Public Health Act was established in the year 1848 for the improvement of sanitation of town's population. People gained benefit which helped in improving their way of living. People gained economic and transport benefit by the urban development within the city. In the year 1909, Act of Town was passed which was proposed to improve and observe the resident's condition in domestic houses (Permitted Development, 2008, p.1).

There is a great impact of political, economic, social and technological factors on urban development of the city. The support of the government and the policies of the government can help the urban development and thus political factors are of great importance in urban development.
