United States Public Education Grading System

Executive Summary

The paper gives a brief overview of the grading system of United States and how these grade system impact on students learning. Many school systems across the country are moving to a standards-based system of grading in an effort to improve assessment and ensure mastery of standards at each grade level. Education in the U.S. is mainly public. It is controlled and funded at three levels: the federal authorities, the authorities of the state and local authorities. There is a system of public schools. Higher education institutions mainly private are trying to attract students and graduate students from around the world. Researchers have also highlighted the possible negative outcomes of over-testing or narrowing the curriculum in United States education system to focus on a narrow set of standards assessed in high-stakes standardized tests. However, little research has been done on how standards-based grading corresponds to student performance on criterion referenced standardized tests. Thus, the study of standards-based grading and grade reporting is needed to determine whether such a grading system is an effective measure of student mastery of standards, as reported on criterion referenced competency test. The major purpose of any kind of grading system is for measuring the achievement of the students for establishing the learning objectives. The performance data let the students on individual basis know where they stand in the development for needed competencies.
