United States Border Security

Introduction

Border security issues have increased in importance within national, regional and global policymaking. This is because of the inter relationship between the perceived political, socio culture, economic and military interest. These include the long-standing disputes between the people and states and the recent additions like acceleration of migration to United States and attacks on the homeland. All of these factors have prompted the government at federal and state level to take action for securing the national borders. In addition to its new institutional practices have been developed like enhanced sea, land and air security measures for the purpose of securing borders (Andreas, 2000). These measures have brought many transnational and regulatory frameworks like human trafficking and smuggling agreements. These agreements are done both on national and international levels.

The quest for securing borders both at national and at allied level has promoted countries to share databases like Canada-Us, European countries. This quest for securing borders has resulted in the development of several agencies like Interpol, NATO and many other organizations (Beare, 1997). These organizations help in the eradication of common enemies or any possible threat to the national security. So the border security is a very important concept keeping in view the possible threat, huge influx of migrant and other socio economic factors.

Border Security

United States is a vast country with its borders on several fronts. Some of these borders are opening in seas while others in countries like Mexico etc. Thus, the country requires a border security plan through which it can secure its borders in the best possible ways. As in the present case billions are spent annually for securing borders in the form of halting illegal migrant , Seizing borders and other various security steps like stopping smugglings etc. However, the truth is that in securing border we are can call our self-successful to around 50%. The rest of the time, other parties win (Hall et.al, 2004). These are the smugglers from Mexico, who bring in huge cache of heroine, weapons and illegal migrants. Through these security breaches terrorist, sneak into our country and cause situations like 9-11.

Most of the breaches occur through the sea and land routes. As we know that our country has thousand of mile of coast. Million are being spent to restrict the illegal immigrant and illegal product into the country. Success is limited but since the resource we have, can bring this illegal act to almost zero. These people make use of boats made of wood and other material, which are not caught in radars. Thus, they sneak into the country. They bring in illegal migrant, weapons and banned substances. Through the land, they sneak into the country by using forged documents or through the use of tunnels built along various borders of the country. These banned substance or illegal migrants disperse into the various parts of the country, thus causing a great damage to the nation.
