Introduction

The most effective means of managing change occurs when the leader: does not have to resort to coercion Can choose the best way to influence how people in the workplace behave Adopts & appropriate style of leadership ranging from task-oriented (authoritative) or people-oriented (participative)Motivating-For work that is routine or repetitive, pay increases & promotion are often used as motivating forces. Staff may also be motivated by being told they will be working in a supportive environment, are needed, & have special qualities they can bring to the job.

For individual staff members, motivation comes in part from having an approachable leader with a clear purpose; a well-considered strategic plan designed to achieve that purpose, carefully formed & communicated directions, & plans that allow everyone to participate with purpose.

Communicating-Communicating is the glue that holds organisations together. For management, it is the tool by which they can exchange information with staff, coordinate activities, exert influence & promote understandings & organisational values. Types of communication in large organisations: One to one: A direct personal approach can generate commitment & enthusiasm, but managers must be understanding listeners. Meetings: Briefings between management & key staff can be a two-way exchange, & team meetings can be used to report progress & co-ordinate efforts. These can be formally organised but more usually are informal. Members of networks share information which management can use as feedback. Computer networks necessitate training of staff in their ethical use. (Alwin R. 2002. Pp. 5)

Possible alternative strategies

Flexibility & adaptability to change-Managers are constantly having to guide & direct staff & offer solutions to management problems based on their own experience & the experience of others. As circumstances change, managers must be prepared to search out & implement theories & practices appropriate to their current needs.

Self-managing-Because of their large range of responsibilities, effective managers need to be able to manage the things they have to do in the time available. Self-management therefore includes good time management where effective managers plan their work; set goals, deadlines & priorities; & delegate where possible.

Teamwork-Managers are expected to be able to get the best out of their staff by using the skills & abilities of staff as members of a larger team, with all the members working in the same direction. Therefore, managers need to be able to select the right people for a particular piece of work. But above all, they need to be able to let their team members get on with their work without intrusion from management.

Complex problem solving & decision making-In problem solving the manager would decide on procedures, the people to be involved, & the time & other resources needed.

Decision making skills would then be needed to choose a solution from a range of alternatives. Management must keep in mind the most advantageous outcome for the business. Once the most appropriate alternative has been chosen, the management would need to communicate this clearly to the ...
