Today the participation of women in business and politics, showing positions of power is remarkable, breaking through in activities that traditionally were males. Moreover, the type of women who exercise leadership, would be different from that of men, it is a leadership that promotes team motivation, encouraging participation, sharing information and encouraging self-esteem of others. This paper aims to analyze the importance of gender in leadership and gender specific leadership and management traits.
Importance of new gender in leadership
The new gender leadership approach requires a new kind of leaders, that is to say, which makes visible women leaders in all aspects of social, political and economic, and also defines a clean and distinct understanding of the world and thus to exercise leadership. Leadership, as the authority is something that everyone should recognize, it is not something that is given by the position of power that you can occupy in the hierarchy, many other things are required (Kellerman, et.al, 2007). The women who have been historically remote power, know very well what exercise influence with intellectual and emotional sensitivity. They have learned to develop the ability to understand the needs of people, their families, friends and teams, and know that they cannot impose ideas but rather negotiate from shared interests. Women have developed emotional capacity more than men, as evidenced by numerous studies.
Women have more ability to listen to take into account the proposals from all members of the group, precisely because of what they have already stated, by talking and listening. In this way, they are able to involve their team by involving shared projects (Werhane, et.al, 2011). Leadership of women exercises authority with understanding as the ability to express them through the diversity of each. This means encouraging the ability to be and expressing their thoughts. Second important element of gender leadership is the sense of time. Women have had fewer opportunities to give their opinion and it is taken into account. This makes it very important for women to be very careful to make timely proposals. This is a leadership that knows how to listen, and take advantage of opportunities for greater success for their proposals (Gurian & Annis, 2008).
