Abstract

This aim of this essay is to identify the definition, characteristics and causes of learning disabilities, giftedness and communication disorders. It aims to provide an understanding regarding the intellectual disabilities that are being faced by people around the globe. The study on this topic is extremely important as it can enable people with intellectual disabilities to develop learning skills and improvise their communicating skills.

In the beginning, this essay will include the importance of the topic. It would further include the recommendations and solutions that are necessary for dealing with student with the disabilities, disorders and giftedness. At the last, it will include the dual diagnoses that are practices by physiologists in dealing with learning disabilities, communication disorders and giftedness.

Introduction

Disability of a person, child, student or employee may refer to a phenomenon where they are unable to learn things. The understanding of intellectual disabilities is an important issue when need to research in order to find ways for enabling the individuals with intellectual disabilities to develop learning skills. Communication disorder is a kind of disorder in which people are unable to understand the written and spoken words. It is not necessary that such people would only have physical disability, but they have issues in communicating including speaking and listening.

Giftedness is defined as an intellectual ability of an individual to perform higher than average population on several tasks. These people are born intelligent and have different set of skills as compared to average people. These people have greater probability of achieving success in life because of having gifted intellectual abilities. However, they have equal probability of suffering from learning disabilities and communication disorders (MacCoach et al, 2001).

Discussion

The term of intellectual disability is described as the limitations of a person in mental functioning and various skills. These limitations may include the ability of a person to take care of him or herself, communicate or being active socially. The disability of such people restricts there social abilities to interact or be social with the society in proper manner. These people have lesser ability of learning and developing themselves as compared to others. They are slow in learning to walk, talk, and to meet their personal needs (Mental Health Special Interest Research Group, 2001).

The children that are victims of intellectual disabilities would face trouble in performing well in school. They do have the ability to learn, however, their pace is much slower as compared to average students. Intellectual disability can be caused by many factors. A child may face intellectual disability if his/her face problems regarding pregnancy. This is because the baby in the womb of mother is not able to develop fully. If a pregnant woman gets rubella infection or consumes alcohol then the baby may have the intellectual disability. Other causes of intellectual disability may involve the problems relating to birth (Government of South Australia, 2012).
