Drug is any substance, natural or synthetic that introduced in organism modifies its functions. Natural drugs are obtained by certain plants, animals and some minerals. Examples are caffeine (coffee), nicotine (found in tobacco), opium (in opium) and tetrahydrocannabinol THC (marijuana). Synthetic drugs are manufactured in the lab, requiring special techniques for this (Vlahov et.al, 2010). The term drug lends itself to various interpretations, but often raises the idea of ??a prohibited substance, illegal and harmful to the individual use, modifying its functions, sensations, mood and behavior.

The drugs are classified into three categories: stimulants, depressants and disturbing mental activities. The term drug involves analgesics, stimulants, hallucinogens, barbiturates and tranquilizers, besides alcohol and volatile substances (Rudolph et.al, 2010). Psychotropic, are drugs that have tropism and affect the central nervous system, modifying the psychic activities and behavior. These drugs can be absorbed in various ways: by injection, inhalation, oral, intravenous injection or applied rectally (suppository).

Drug abuse and drug are major burdens to our society. It is estimated that economic costs involved in drug abuse and addiction is resulting in health and crime related costs and is also resulting in losses in productivity. However, several researchers argue that this picture is very small of the devastating consequences of drug abuse. This essay locates a current article related to the drug abuse in our society (Kerr et.al, 2010). Furthermore, this essay also discusses the sociological perspectives of this issue and then relates them with the three main sociological theories including; Symbolic Interactionism, Class Conflict Theory, and Functional Analysis.

Misuse and Abuse of Drugs

Drug addiction is a topic of great national and international concern, not only because of damage to the individual and collective, but also by the impact on society in general health, requiring for preventing and facing the adoption of policies and actions that articulated aim to minimize the consequences of this very important social issue as well as raise awareness about the issue at hand (Kerr et.al, 2010). A major problem of drugs is the feeling that they cause in the body of the users making them dependent. The drug gives pleasure. It is due to this fact that those who use once, coming back to use, but these did not know at first contact the damage that they cause with their continued use, harming their status physical, psychological and social.

The abuse of drugs involves various sectors of society, such as legal, police, medical, educational, occupational, family, and others, in addition to being surrounded by the diversity of opinions as to damages, benefits, pleasure and displeasure (Robertson et.al, 2010) On one hand the information related violence due to trafficking, and other media stimulates the sale of alcoholic beverages, which is also a type of drug that is addictive and has serious consequences for society.
