Understanding Colossians 3:12-17

Introduction

The Colossian is the 12th book of the New Testament. The passage that I have selected is the Colossians 3:12-17. I have selected the passage as it presents a good account of what are the qualities that should be there in an ideal believer.

Historical and Cultural Background

In this passage Paul tries to convey the message that the purpose of a human on this earth is to spread the word of the Creator. Every minute of his existence must be for the service of God. There are six ways in which he can do this. These are listed hereunder (Jerry, 2008).

The Creator is benevolent and compassionate. He is all forgiving and man being a creation of God is expected to imitate the qualities of his Divine Master.

The life of a believe on earth shall be guided by love. This will make life for him and those around him much easier.

The peace of Christ should be led into the hearts of the believers.

A true devotee of religion must always remain thankful for we cannot thank Him enough for the blessings that He has sent down upon us.

Man is supposed to follow the commandment of the Lord and follow them through in all the aspects of his life.

A man should live as if he is a representative of Jesus Christ on this earth and that one day he shall return unto Him.

The society at that point in time lacked this sense of humanity which was expected of them. Hence, Paul felt the need to write this letter.

Literary Context

The Colossian is the 12th book of the New Testament. However, it is unfortunate that the authenticity of Colossian is debated among religious scholars. The ones who are not convinced of its authenticity are apprehensive that it may not have been penned by Paul (Surbrook, 2009). The use of language and the style that has been adopted to send the message across is quite convincing though. The theological concepts presented are so strong that it leaves no room for skepticism on its authenticity (Wilson, 2005). The main themes of the letter relate to Doctrinal sections, Conduct as well as the Prison Epistles.

In the selected passage, there is a link between the lists given in the preceding passages. The first list is the list of sins related to sexual attitude and behavior. These sins are unforgivable and lead to damage beyond repair. The evil desires of a man and the satisfaction of the same in an immoral manner is not only forbidden but is loathed and abhorred by the pious and the true followers (Bible Gateway, 2012). The second list describes the sins of speech. These include use of foul and demeaning language, lies, anger, rage and others.

The third list which is the list of signs that indicate the presence of Jesus in a person as well as love. These qualities such as compassion, humbleness, patience and politeness serve to build relationships.
