Obstetric Care

In the area of obstetric care, a nurse and the supporting staff provides services to those women who are pregnant, or mother of newborn infants. This area requires specialization and expertise because it involves the healthcare of mothers and infants. Nurses and their supporting staff, called as OB-GYN (obstetric-gynecologic), have the responsibility to ensure that the maternity ward smoothly operates in the respective hospitals (Carlisle, 2008).

There are a number of responsibilities of a supporting staff in obstetric care. Among the key responsibilities, the supporting staff needs to ensure good health of mothers during labor, delivery, and recovery. In addition, it is the responsibility of the supporting staff, along with nurses, to look after the health of the new infants. The supporting staff needs to assist OB nurses in educating and explaining mothers about the medical care and procedures, and potential health issues (Tappin & Britten, 2006). Moreover, the supporting staff helps during delivery, ensuring that the delivery room is clean, prepared, and has all the equipments which the doctor needs. With respect to this, the supporting staff assists OB nurses in assisting women during delivery, and trying their utmost to keep her calm and relaxed. In other words, the supporting staff performs all the basic tasks so that an OB nurse and the doctors can concentrate on the delivery process.

On the other hand, the supporting staff also performs tasks such as keeping track of the partners and family members who accompany the patient in the hospital throughout the child birth and during recovery. It may include all the necessary measures such as assisting members of the family to find the right room, and ensuring extra attendants are not entertained as per the policy of the hospital regarding the number of attendants. One of the significant responsibilities of the supporting staff is to assist nurses and educate mothers on tube feeding and healthcare of new infants.

Leadership Role

The clinical leadership, which I will use in the presentation, will focus on the patient and their needs, and ensure that the quality of care they provide is achieved. This occurs when the advanced practice nurse with and from others, learn about how to build appropriate working relationships with health team members, transmits confidence to patients and colleagues and when able to resolve health problems as part of a team. The advanced practice nurses are leaders, role models and mentors to empower (empowerment) to patients and colleagues, who propose and implement change strategies that improve patient care and improve the perception of the value of advanced nursing practice. Some clinical leadership skills are part of the consultative and collaborative skills of the Advanced Practice Nursing (Bolton, 2004).

The leadership role, which I will play in the presentation, is the defender. This role will emphasize on the patients, family, team members, and colleagues. As a leader of the group, it will be a responsibility to defend patients, and ensure that they receive quality ...
