"Trifles" by Susan Glaspell

Susan Glaspell's play, Trifles, discovers the detail that women yield vigilance to the little things that may lead to the explaining of a larger problem(Ricker 67). Why are women so into the little things? The vigilance to minutia appears to be the beginning issue to explaining the larger problem. Think of the little things as parts of a puzzle. When the little parts arrive simultaneously you glimpse the larger picture. In the play Trifles the men appear to believe the women only concern about the little things, or trifles. What the men manage not recognize is that the women are really explaining the killing by being concerned, or trifling, over the little details(Ricker 67). To actually realize this facet we have to gaze at the play itself. The first demonstration of the vigilance to minutia is the crop preserves. In lines seventy-eight to seventy-nine Mrs. Peters states, "She concerned about that when it turned so cold. She said the fires proceed out and her jars would break." To which the Sheriff answers, "Well, can you trounce the women! Held for killing and worrin' about her preserves." In line eighty-three Mr. Hale states, "Well, women are use to being concerned over trifles." If Mrs. Wright had not been preoccupied, she could have begun a blaze to hold the preserves from freezing. Another demonstration of trifling is discovering that Mrs. Wright did not aroused while her married man was being strangled to death. Unless the Wrights dozed in distinct beds, Mrs. Wright should have sensed the labor between her married man and the murderer. Even though Mrs. Wright said she was a deep sleeper, she still should have learned the gasping for air and the labor that was going on right besides her. Another thing that appeared very odd to everyone was that there was a cannon in the house. Why not use the gun? Why use the rope? According to the term paper, On Susan Glaspell's Trifles, the scribe remarks, "The strangling of Mr. Wright, which perplexes all when a cannon was handy, is reminiscent of the strangling of that bird (1)." The third demonstration of discovering the little things is the piecing of the quilt. The women were marveling if she was going to tie up it or quilt it.
