Transforming New York's Fresh Kills Landfill
Introduction
The Fresh Kills Landfill was established in 1947as impermanent landfill. In the end, in the 20th century it became the major landfill of the New York. It was one of the largest landfill or manmade formation in the world. It was a landfill spread around the 2200 acres in the New York City in the United States. It was named because of its location by the side of the fresh kills estuary in the west of Staten Island. The renovation of the site started on a multiple phase for the reprocess as Fresh Kills Park in October 2009. Initially it was planned as temporary landfill but after 20 years it has became the developed area use for multipurpose like residential, industrial and recreational. At the climax of its processes, the stuffing of 20 barges added to the site daily, which carries six hundred and fifty tons of trash. It was 25 meters taller than statue of liberty in 2001 and also it was expected that if it is kept open than it would become the highest tip on the coast of the east.
The landfill was located on a salt marsh land. The boundaries of the landfill still hold the large amount of wildlife. It includes the freshwater wet lands, tidal wetlands and forests. It can also be seen from the space with the naked eyes. It is made up of four segments that include more than fifty years of landfill, which is mostly in the form of waste of households. The waste is predisposed at the Fresh Kills landfill and the putrefaction goods of this desecrate hold in several chemicals. These chemicals can go into the environment in numerous ways like it can mix in the air from barge delivery and from trash delivery in the trucks. The project is run by the NYC department of parks and recreation with the NYC department of sanitation.
