The film kidnapping, Caucasian Style is a Russian Comedy movie. The plot of the movie revolves around an old tradition of bride kidnapping. The tradition has been practiced by the many regions in the Northern Caucasus. The film was first premiered in the cinemas of Moscow in the year 1967. The film starts with the student, Shurik, who makes a trip to the Caucasus in order to learn about the old traditions and customs being practiced in the region. He also encounters with a beautiful Caucasian girl and falls in love with her (Dalton-Brown, 1997).
The girl is kidnapped in the movie as her uncle makes the plan along with his friend who is really interested in girls and wants to marry her. The story goes on majorly focusing on the traditions of the area. Under the cover of humor, the writer actually reflects on the political and social differences between the two countries.
The Relationship between the Soviet Union as a Whole and the Caucasus
One of the most alluring territories for the Soviets was the Caucasus owing to its land and people. The beauty of the region was not the only temptation for the Russian Empire, the female beauty in the Caucasus has also been talked about in the Russian literature. Many of the Russians Tsars were married to the Caucasian princesses just to have beauty and power in the region (Makanin, 1994).
Boris Godunov in the 16th century followed by Peter the Great in the 17th century sighted the Caucasian region as a road to invade Persia. Moreover, Peter 1 viewed the strategic significance of the land and started to populate it right after its conquest. The people who were brought to populate the region were Cossacks and the serfs, who were very much equipped to defend themselves at the time of any assault. The second half of the eighteenth century was the time when Catherine II designed her plans to expand the territories of the Russian Empire.
However, Alexander I waged a Caucasian war which lasted from 1817 to 1864. Meanwhile, Alexei Ermolov was deputed as a chief commander of the territory, who out of his glory and respect, earned popularity among the Russian people. His erudition and military talent in the wars against Napoleon and Caucasian campaigns made him very respectable personality in the region. He was also portrayed as a national hero by many poets and authors because of his extreme patriotism. He was the one who banned mountaineering for the non Russians. Especially, his racial discrimination victimized Chechens (Horton, 1993).
At the end of the Caucasian war, Northern Caucasus was annexed with the Russian Empire. Even after annexation, the Caucasus has been the most bothersome region for Russia.
