Toyota Manufacturing System

Introduction

The Manufacturing System (MS) of Toyota Company is based on integrated socio-technical system, which is based on management practices and philosophy and it is commonly known as Toyota Production System (TPS). TPS manages logistics and manufacturing activities of the company and it also interacts with the customers and suppliers. The manufacturing system of Toyota is based on “just in time” and “Jidoka” production techniques, which were introduced by the founder of Toyota Company named engineer Taiichi Ohno, Sakichi Toyoda and his son Kiichiro Toyoda. A specific set of practices are used by the staff of Toyota Company in manufacturing of automobiles.

The manufacturing system of Toyota Company is based on the following three important aspects:

To provide the members of the company with effective job security, fair treatment and work satisfaction.

To facilitate the customers of the company with premium quality of automobiles at highly affordable cost in short possible lead time.

To manage organisational flexibility while responding the market and achieve profits by effective cost reduction strategies.

Toyota Manufacturing System

The manufacturing system of the company ensures the elimination of overburden, unevenness and wastages in all the units, which makes the work of the staff smooth and efficient. The Toyota Manufacturing System is based on standardization for ensuring that the methods of operations that are used within the organisation are similar and according to the international market requirement. The main focus of the company is to manufacture quality automobiles that are safe for the users (Dombrowski, p.341).

The processes and procedures that are used in manufacturing of automobiles are continuously monitored and improved by the members of the company; this practice is also known as “Kaizen” and it is applied by various manufacturing companies all over the world. Toyota Company has gained reputation in the international market through effective maintenance of quality manufacturing systems and skilled workers. Implementation of Kaizen in the company's operations has helped in maintaining effective operations.

Toyota Company is one of those organisations that are more adoptive towards radical improvement strategies, as it is actively involved in process improvement activities. The management of Toyota Company is known as “Lean Management” as it focuses on continuous improvement “Kaizen”. It is the company's lean philosophy that is helping the company in reduction of wastages. Elimination of waste material is known as “Muda” and it is one of the most important factors of Toyota Manufacturing System (Ebioka et al., p.2011).

Lean manufacturing system of Toyota Company is helping the company in bringing positive change in the company's economics. The fundamentals of lean manufacturing system are Machines, Material and Man i.e. labor, which are effectively blended for attaining the desired outcomes. Jidoka was the oldest part of Toyota Company's manufacturing system that was made introduced by Sakichi Toyoda.
