The cynical statement “Tourism planning within Malaysia is still dominated by an essentially 'economic' approach to development” is true as it affirms recurrent scenario of Malaysian development and its relationship with the tourism planning. One has to agree with this statement as the tourism plans in Malaysia are aligned with the aim to bring economic development. Keeping in view this stamen, the essay focuses on this dominance towards the tourism planning.

Discussion

Malaysia is a country that comprises of various ethnic groups and religions such as Indians, Malays and Chinese. There is complete peace and harmony among all these groups and this has turned Malaysia, home to many cultures and festivities of colors. Geographically, the country is also diverse where there are mountains as well as rainforests. Highways of highlands, sandy beaches and affluent mangroves can also be found in this country.

Tourism Malaysia and Tourism Promotion Board come under the Tourism Ministry. The Tourist Development Corporation (TDC) was developed on 10 August 1972. It came under the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Malaysia. The Ministry of Culture, Arts and Tourism (MOCAT) was developed and Tourism Development Corporation was shifted to the new ministry. Tourism Malaysia has developed quickly with its concentrated efforts on advertising Malaysia at the local and universal levels. It intends to market Malaysia as a chief end of brilliance in the district. Its vision is to make the tourism business a prime donor to the social and economic advancement of the country.

With the development of planet tourism and Malaysia's potential as tourism objective, has helped the change and center in the nation's tourism division. It has helped produce substantive outside trade profit and job. Tourism Malaysia now has 34 abroad and 11 tourism promotion agencies. In order to promote the destination as tourism spot, Tourism Malaysia went into a deal with the famous football club in 2006. Previously, it had a deal with Chelsea Football Club, and these initiatives helped Malaysia promote itself as an attractive destination for all the potential tourists.

Goals and Objectives

For any tourist destination, it is imperative that they want to increase the flow of visitors in order to make more revenue, and develop their market. According to the Tourism and Culture Ministers, Datuk Seri Mohamed and Nazri Abdul Aziz the target is to get 28 million tourists from abroad to the country in 2014. This will be an additional 3 million as compared to last year. The tourism ministry has a plan known as the Malaysia Tourism Transformation Plan which has the aim of attracting 36 million tourists and raise revenues of RM 168 million by 2020.
