Introduction

The purpose of this study is to expand the boundaries of our knowledge by exploring some relevant and factual information relating to the analysis of Case Study- Travel and Tourism. Demand for tourist attractions is determined largely by trends in UK domestic holiday tourism, the number of overseas visitors to the UK, and the day-trip market, although local visitors account for most of visitors to obvious attractions. In general, the larger the tourist attraction, the more dependent it is on the day-trip and tourism markets. Since 1990, the average number of visits per attraction has declined by 3%. There are a number of reasons for this decline, including the growing number of attractions, the increasing demand for overseas holidays, and an increase in competition from other pastimes, such as shopping and sporting activities.

Task 1 (A) TWO management styles identified at Whitechapel Tourism Development (WTD)

The two management styles present at Whitechapel Tourism Development is autocratic management style and modified custodial management style. Under autocratic management style decisions are taken directly by the managers regardless of opinions and ideas of employees. Employees are ordered within the departments to complete their assigned tasks in minimal time. The second style is modified custodial management style which encourages a manager to distribute some certain work tasks to his staff. For instance, at WTD, it is noted by the staff that the working relationship between these three DCEs and between DCE and CE are strained, unpleasant and over competitive. The current staff strength in each of the three divisions is 75, totalling to 225, and they are marshalled to varying tasks in groups as required by their managers when directed by DCEs, deploying individual specialism.

Following are some of characteristics of the management styles mentioned in Task 1(A);

Decision Making

The foremost characteristic of autocratic management style is the ability to make a decision. This implies that input from team members is rarely taken, but the decision making authority rests with the management.

Lack of Authority with Group Members

In autocratic management style, the group members are provided with no or little authority. With little or no authority, group members are liable to do things according to instructions provided to them.

Communication Gap

Communication within these management styles is at its lowest in autocratic and modified custodial management style. Lack of communication among team member resulted in delays in terms of tasks completion.

Lack of Trust

Lack of trust is among the characteristics of autocratic and custodial management style. This is the reason that employees are rarely provided with critical and important decision making authority. However, they are provided with an opportunity to share their opinions and ideas with the appropriate managers.

Task 1 (C) Communication processes at Whitechapel Tourism Development
