KANBAN

Sugimori Y., Kusunoki K., Cho F. & Uchikawa S., (1977) Toyota production system and Kanban system Materialization of just-in-time and respect-for-human system International Journal of Production Research Volume 15, Issue 6, 1977: 553-564

Mr. Taiiohi Ohno- the then Vice-President of Toyota Motor Company has developed Kanban System and Toyota Production System that are introduced in this paper. The authors elaborate that in these systems; there are two main distinguishing aspects i.e. 'just-in-time production' and 'respect-for-human'. In JIT production, in needed quantity, at the required time, only the essential products are produced, and also, the stock readily available is kept to a least. Being a system with the 'respect-for-human', employees are permitted to put on show their potentials through dynamic involvement in running and meliorating their individual workshops.

The Kanban System is described by authors as a production control system that is meant for JIT production and bringing in fully utilization of capabilities of workers. Workshops of Toyota with the utilization of Kanban System have no more dependent on an electronic computer. Instead of computerized system, the rationales for the employment of Kanban System are as follows: quick and clear-cut acquirement of facts, cutback of cost processing information, and circumscribing excess capacity of earlier shops.

A form of order card, in the Kanban System, known as Kanban is used. Kanban System is of two types: conveyance Kanban and production Kanban. When moving from one process to the previous process, conveyance Kanban is carried. Production Kanban is drawn on to organize production of the section taken out by the succeeding process.

Reaction: This paper was actually a narrative of the system by four Toyota managers about their organization which had built up so as to contest the auto giants of West. The outcome of the ideas presented in the paper is a world-beating system that has led Toyota to the undeniable championship of the auto industry of world, while an uncertain future is faced by its U.S. rivals face. A low-inventory, right-first-time approach was developed by Toyota, in spite of the less financial resources or economies of scale, in which through the manufacturing process, material was pulled with no waste and devoid of the necessitation for complex computer systems.

Just about a quarter of a century ago, Six Sigma took industry by storm, as a quality improvement framework. Extensions and derivatives of Six Sigma, for example Lean Six Sigma and Design for Six Sigma, in addition to applications of problem-solving straddling from production to service sectors, have proceeded to magnetize prevalent interest internationally. On the other hand, claims are also questioned from time to time on efficacy of Six Sigma established by its advocates, and Six Sigma is generally not embraced by academic organizations as an excellence prescription. A critical examination is made, in this paper, of the nature of Six ...
