Toshiba came into existence in 1939 by the merger of two Japanese companies: Tokyo Electric Company, and Shibaura Seisakusho. It was the first to launch a laptop computer in 1985; and by 1995, it was an electronics giant in Japan. At that time, its only competitors were Matsushita and Hitachi with Compaq coming up a few years later. Their major assembly line was OME works where most of their Laptops were assembled.
