CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Religions have affected human nature differently though time and the effects of religion on man have changed with time. This change of human nature in reference to religion creates the foundation of this research and aims at understanding the change in religious though from traditional ecclesiastic beliefs to an age of inquiry and reason. This resulted as shift in the tone of literary works, from traditional ecclesiastic beliefs to an age of inquiry and reason. Literature is always considered as the most important source to look for the changes in history. It not only provides evidences with the help of events, but also reflected through the changes in its tone. This tone can assist in studying the changes in the religion and culture during renaissance and also effect of these changes can be observed in the tone of literature.

This topic takes the research through an expansion of times and situations shedding light on different elements to show how changes take place. One very important time where religion had the most significant effect to human nature is apparent during the Protestant Reformation. The Protestant Reformation was a religious movement with political implications of such revolutionary impact that it affected the Catholic Church in the sixteenth century, which led to the birth of Protestantism (Lupton, 2006, p. 145).

Background of the study

There are various changes in the literature, after the period of renaissance. One of the major impacts is that Renaissance affected religion and this was reflected in the literature. This change or shift in tone from traditional ecclesiastic beliefs to an age of inquiry and reason can be easily observed by close analysis of the renaissance literature. Renaissance is the age of knowledge and reawakening. It was the time when there were advancements and changes in every field. Everything was judged on the basis of rational and logical grounds. These changes were reflected in every field such as science, art, music, literature, politics, religion and different other fields. One of the major changes was in the field of religious studies. The movement of renaissance was later followed by the religious movement of reformation, but the major problem was combination of religion and Renaissance. Religious Renaissance was a major problem as it deals with the testing of religion on the basis of logical justification.
