Managing People in Organizations - Time Flexibility at Work

Introduction

Time flexibility at work is a frequently debated subject area of management. This discussion will explore and evaluate contemporary thinking that exists amongst individuals and groups in an organizational with regard to the concept of time flexibility. In order to do so adequately, the discussion will proceed by exploring and developing an understanding of the theories, concepts and techniques employed in strategic human resource management that relate to time flexibility practices. In addition, it will be considered imperative to assess the contribution of HRM to the achievement of organizational goals when perceived in the frame of reference of time flexibility practices.

The discussion will synthesize HRM concepts together with wider contextual issues, in order to develop appropriate responses to situations that relate to real life cases that can be expected (or have been recorded) to occur in organizational settings. This will demand the systematic & creative translation of organizational behaviour theories, concepts and techniques into recommendations that can be utilized in the management of the human resource in a range of organizations. Furthermore, it will be imperative to critically assess and evaluate the theoretical basis of strategic human resource management. To this end, the discussion will integrate a systematic formulation of appropriate HRM responses to enable the organization to better achieve its objectives.

The purpose of this discussion is to demonstrate a critical understanding of both the theoretical underpinnings and the modern-day application of time flexibility practices. Within this critical understanding of modern day application, the scope of the discussion will give relevance to the manner in which modern day organizations employ people management practices/procedures etc. and the extent to which these approaches tend to be successful in achieving the organization's objectives. At this point, it is important to note that the purpose of this discussion is not to engage in a discussion of the techniques and methods through which time flexibility is implemented; but to highlight the benefits and challenges of implementing time flexibility. To this end, the discussion will give special attention to the presentation of recommendations for countering the challenges and intricacies that riddle the implementation of time flexibility.

Employees like to have some form of independence on how and when they work. While leaders may be charismatic and may excel in setting positive examples, failure to allow the employee to make the final decisions demanded ...
