Thesis Statement # 1: The Role of Modernity in Death of Salesmans

In Arthur Miller story, “Death of Salesman”, the major character was Willy Loman who was living on the modern America cusp, in late 1940's (Miller, 1949). There are a number of innovations applied specifically to the home: it was TV and washing machine becomes a general idea of household in the period of 1950s. Willy is a man who left behind by the progress. Actually, Willy is not able to compete against the young men in the modern world of business. Expresses of Miller are ambivalence towards the modern object and the modern mindset. As a new and more cars and appliances being manufacture, objective of Willy Loman was regularly trying to attain the best thing for his family unit. Miller has expresses ambivalence towards the modern objects as well as modern mindset. However, character of Miller Loman is deeply considered as flawed character, and there is something compelling about his nostalgia. In a materialistic world, he slowly begins to lose his mind, and it becomes the only thing he worried about it, keeping up with the people near him in term of possessions and success. Throughout the play, Miller regularly mention the fact that he is running shortage of funds and does not longer able to pay for innovative appliance as well as sadly regrets to go with Ben to Africa, who struck it rich. In a number of cases, modernity has set the time for the dreadful events to chase in the Loman's life. Significantly, Willy finally reaches for the modern objects, the gas heater and car to assist him in an attempt of his suicide.
