Theory of Transition and a Sustainable Future

Introduction

The world is changing at quite a rapid pace, new processes are being developed on a regular basis and the old ones are being kicked out of the windows. However, these transformations from the old way of doing things to the new ones are not simply the result of a snapped magical wand.

There are series of transformative and transitive changes taking place at the backhand which directly or indirectly contribute towards how the future of mankind would be. In order to better understand about what transition management actually is and how transitions within energy and transport industry impacts the probability of a sustainable future; an in depth discussion regarding the relevant factors is required.

Discussion

Theory of Transition

Study of transition is all about understanding the different natural and industrial transformations taking place within the surrounding environment; and how these transformations are affecting the world in which we reside along with many species created by nature. However, these changes and transformations do not simply result over night and are a result of a prolonged series of events (Loorbach, 2010).

Process of Transition

As mentioned above, transition takes place in a series of events which are all interlinked and diversified at the initial stage. However, as time progresses, these different factors start forming a combined effect and a uni-directed change pattern.

Pre-Development (Gestation) Stage

The Pre-Development Stage is the one at which multiple changes start taking place within the society. Although these changes do not have any particular similarity between them, but their conception is centred on a singular point of concern.

For instance, a new technological advancement takes place which introduces the usage of glass for touch enabled technological products. This advancement would not only end up with the invention, but the following technological niche activities would also be associated with it:

New Products would start developing such as touch enables phones, touch enabled electronic devices etcetera.

The extraction of glass material throughout the world would start accelerating to meet the extensive demands of the new technological product manufacturers.

User demand would rise and their preferences would start changing and the demand for this new glass touch enabled product line start growing on a swift pace (Stephens & Graham, 2008).

Take Off Stage

At this stage of transition, the newly developed technology starts to pick up its pace of development and starts bringing about changes within the society under a more personal domain. In other words, the Socio-Technical Regime starts taking place where the “Window of Opportunity” is explored and the different dimensions of the technological and social factors start inter mingling.

For instance, the societal system of living starts changing and the new technology becomes a part of the normal lives of the people residing within the society. In this case, the adoption of glass enabled technological products at multiple levels of human operations would start changing the way people use to live currently. They would start developing habits of using these new products and their lifestyles would also change ...
